Processor, GPU, Neural Engine, storage

Last year, Apple used the S8 64-bit dual-core processor in the Series 8 which wasn’t that different from the S7 or S6 in the previous Apple Watches.

But with Series 9, Apple says the S9 SiP brings notable improvements across the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine.

Apple didn’t give a specific measure of how much faster the CPU of the S9 is compared to S8, but it features 5.6 billion transistors – up 60% from S8.

For the S9 GPU, Apple says it’s 30% faster than the S8 and the Neural Engine is twice as fast.

Case and display

Apple Watch Series 9 keeps on with the same sizes that launched with Apple Watch Series 7. That’s 45 and 41mm cases and a larger display that’s 20% bigger than Series 4-6/SE and 50% larger than Series 3.

The main (only?) difference with the Series 9 Apple Watch display is brightness has doubled from 1,000 to 2,000 nits.

Apple Watch band compatibility

For bands, loops, and bracelets, bands designed for the previous generation Apple Watch sizes 38/40/41 and 42/44/45mm will work with Apple Watch Series 9.

Battery life and charging

First introduced with Apple Watch 7 and continued with Apple Watch Series 8 and 9 is 33% faster charging than Series 6 and earlier. That means going from 0-80% in 45 minutes instead of around 60 minutes.

New with Apple Watch Series 9 is on-device Siri processing for faster responses and better security. There’s also a new double tap gesture to more easily use the wearable with one hand. Although the latter won’t arrive until an October software update is released.

However, as it happens, anyone with a Series 3 or later can use a double tap-like gesture feature called quick actions:

Another improvement that Apple says comes thanks to the new S9 chip is up to 25% more accurate dictation. And the new on-device Siri enables you to get answers to your personal health metrics.

However, as of January 18, 2024, the Blood Oxygen feature no longer works for new Series 9 and Ultra 2 watches sold in the US.

They've been stalling so many upgrades and design changes just for the anniversary next year, well I hope that they have because the Apple Watch of next year can't be the Apple Watch Series 4SSSSSS. It needs to be a proper update. I'd say a redesign is the bare minimum, and I hope it doesn't get a design like the Ultra...

What is the difference between the Apple Watch 8 and the 9? ›

The Apple Watch Series 9 and Series 8 are nearly identical smartwatches, with the Series 9's upgraded S9 chip and the new Double Tap Gesture being the most substantial differences. The S9 SiP

Is the Apple Watch 9 worth the upgrade? ›

Overall, the Apple Watch Series 9 is a worthwhile upgrade for those coming from an older watch like the Series 4. There's still plenty to gain if you're coming from a more recent watch like the Series 6, but its changes will feel most impactful to those with a watch that's more than three years old.

Should I get the Apple Watch SE or 9? ›

We recommend the Apple Watch SE for younger people and first-time smartwatch buyers. If you're upgrading from an earlier Apple Watch, you want an always-on display, or you want more advanced health tracking, you should consider the Series 9.

Does the Apple Watch 9 have a blood oxygen sensor? ›

While the newly sold devices still have the pulse oximeter hardware, the feature will be disabled. This change comes after courts ruled in favor of Masimo, the tech company who sued Apple for patent violations relating to the blood oxygen tracking technology.

Does the Apple Watch 9 have WiFi? ›

If you have Apple Watch Series 6 or later, you can connect to 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi networks. Apple Watch Series 5 and earlier, and Apple Watch SE, can connect only to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks.

ZDNET's buying advice

That makes the 2023 Apple Watch Series 9 a generational step up. So, if you're in the market for an Apple Watch right now, I'd specifically recommend getting the Series 9 (or the Apple Watch Ultra 2) because the health tracking is such an improvement from previous models.

Will the Apple Watch 9 measure blood pressure? ›

The Apple Watch 9 does not currently have a built-in blood pressure monitor.

Can you text on the Apple Watch Series 9? ›

In the Messages app on Apple Watch, read incoming text messages, then reply using dictation, Scribble, emoji, or a prepared response; type a reply using the QWERTY and QuickPath keyboard (on supported models only, not available in all languages); or switch to your iPhone to type a response.

What is the difference between the Series 8 and 9? ›

The biggest change to the Series 9 is the ability to use the Double Tap feature to launch apps and control your new Apple Watch. And while this is great from an accessibility standpoint, it may feel like a gimmick for anyone who won't see any real benefit.

Why is the Apple Watch SE so cheap? ›

One of the key reasons why the Apple Watch SE (2022) is so affordable is of course its lack of cutting-edge ECG technology, and compared to this year's Apple Watch Series 9 (as well as last year's Series 8), its Retina display is noticeably inferior too.

What is special about the Apple Watch Series 9? ›

Is Apple Watch 8 worth the extra money? ›

If we're grading Apple's latest as a standalone product, it's a hands-down winner. It's beautiful, powerful, and jam-packed with features. Within the larger picture, though, the Series 8 is a lot more of the same old same. If you already own a Series 6 or Series 7, the Series 8 probably doesn't justify an upgrade.
