Since the introduction of the smartphone, the device has played an increasingly important role in people’s life, to the point that today, we could not imagine a day without it. The smartphone market in the United States is one of the world’s largest, with over 310 million smartphone users as of 2023. In line with the overall growth of the smartphone market worldwide, the smartphone penetration rate in the United States has continuously risen over the past several years, reaching around 92 percent in 2023. Revenue from smartphone sales is forecast to reach close to roughly 102 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, recovering from the lower revenue recorded in 2022.
Apple and Samsung produce the most popular smartphones
Apple and Samsung are the market leaders in the U.S. smartphone market. Together the two manufacturers account for almost 80 percent of smartphone unit sales in the country. Apple’s iPhone is the most popular smartphone among U.S. American consumers, with over 50 percent of subscribers using an Apple device in 2023. The strong market position of both Apple and Samsung in the United States is also reflected in the mobile operating system market, of which Apple iOS is the leader, and followed by Android.
5G set to drive the smartphone market
5G capabilities are now a standard feature of flagship smartphones, with around 5G-capable smartphones sold in 2022. This number is only likely to increase in coming years, with several 5G capable phones and foldable smartphones set to be released. Both big tech firms, like Apple and Samsung, and minor manufacturers offer more expensive and cheaper phones with such capabilities, with the average price of 5G smartphones being around 616 U.S. dollars in 2022. As the United States is a large country, the 5G availability varies from city to city, with the cities with the highest 5G availability in 2022 being in Texas. However, many mobile carriers work to guarantee 5G connections throughout the country. In that same year, T-Mobile recorded the highest 5G coverage share, over 50 percent.
